“If we are creating ourselves all the time, then it is never to late to begin creating the bodies we want, instead of the ones we mistaken assume we are stuck with.”
After several months of trying to find the right materials to make a vertical garden, it appeared right under our noses! We had an old BBQ on a wooden frame, which had long since been abandoned on our balcony. I had been using it as a table for the balcony garden. The wood was weathered and perfect to transform into a recycled vertical garden.
Within a matter of minutes, Jurgen had dismantled the most of the frame. It was at this point we decided it might be worth discussing the design to find something we both liked! It was no surprise that we had different ideas about how to approach the project.
After a few minutes of talking and drawing, Jurgen was back to work. He used the bottom of the BBQ as the backing frame and built in several shelves. We worked out we had enough wood to make covers for the shelves, leaving a gap for drainage. The distressed wood looked great and we decided to leave it exactly as it was, instead of varnishing it. We made sure the design was wide enough to hold a decent size pot. Jurgen also created a small shelf at the bottom.
It looks perfect, a boutique vertical garden suitable for a small courtyard. We filled it parsley, chives, coriander, basil, aloe vera and rosemary. Given we wanted to hang it the courtyard, I also put some jasmine and lavender in for a beautiful fragrance in the warmer months. So after much research and pricing materials, it has actually cost us nothing to do and looks amazing. Jurgen did such a great job, I absolutely love it. It’s really fantastic to have fresh herbs and greens on hand. Can’t wait to see what else might be lying around that needs liberating…
Green smoothies have changed the course of Jurgen’s health. Over 20 years ago, Jurgen had a motorbike accident and badly damaged both his knees. He was told he would never walk again. Refusing to be beaten, he got back on his feet and went on to pursue his love of extreme sports. Skydiving, skiing, hiking, base-jumping, cycling, motor biking, sailing, paragliding and the list goes on. You see, Jurgen is my very own Action Hero!
Over the years, Jurgen’s knees started playing up. He was unable to sit in a restaurant for more than ten minutes before his knees would ache. Going to the movies was difficult as he was unable to stretch his legs out, causing pain. We travel many times throughout the year. This was becoming more and more difficult to sit on international flights for such long period of time.
Jurgen had knee surgery around thirteen years ago and was due to have knee surgery again. As his condition worsened, it was starting to limit him from pursuing his sports. Sports are a big part of what makes Jurgen tick so it became a bleak future if he could no long do the things he loved to do.
Eighteen months ago, we were introduced to green smoothies. We had just started drinking them when I experienced my stroke. Jurgen and I began drinking green smoothies everyday. We both experienced different results from making the same lifestyle change. The interesting thing about green smoothies is that they target and improve the areas of health that each individual needs. For me, my cognitive abilities and fatigue greatly improved.
For Jurgen, he experienced weight loss, improved energy levels and most importantly – his knees improved out of sight. He began running and also took up mountain biking. He has now entered several races and is doing phenomenally well. Most importantly when he comes home from mountain biking, I see that sparkle in his eye and I know that he feels fulfilled.
Green smoothies and the addition of raw food have completely repaired Jurgen’s knees. He is fitter than he’s ever been before. We know this amazing result is from changing our diet and lifestyle. Green smoothies gave Jurgen the physical ability and endurance to purse a life that he loves!
It’s another beautiful day at Cheeky Chimp headquarters. Two more blenders were sent off today, to new homes. I’m thrilled to know that people are actively taking steps to look after their health and wellbeing. I have been receiving so many heartfelt emails from people sharing how greens smoothies and raw foods are making a real difference in their lives. It fills me with a sense of purpose to know that sharing this information is really helping people. Thank you to each and every one of you for taking time to let me know how you are going. It really makes my day!
I thought I’d show you the view from my desk at Cheeky Chimp HQ. Ever present our glass of green smoothie, a little bit nature and of course my mini inspiration chimp. You may have spotted our elusive luck dragon in the background!
Here’s today recipe that Jurgen has invented! It went down a treat and is perfect for building the immune system.

Reducing your cholesterol that natural way is easy when you understand the factors that influence it. Cholesterol is essentially the amount of fat that is in your blood stream. Your body makes around 1000 milligrams of cholesterol every day. What you eat each day will contribute to anything above that amount. Depending on what you eat, it can either positively or negatively influence your cholesterol levels. Food creates two types of cholesterol and they both behave differently in the body.
LDL is referred to as the bad cholesterol. Your LDL cholesterol increases when you include meat and animal products into your diet such as cheese, dairy, ice cream and eggs. This will add extra fats to your blood and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke. Pork and Parmesan cheese will dramatically increase your LDL (bad cholesterol). These are some of the worst offenders. Having your cholesterol checked will give you a starting place to ensure you are making good decisions for you diet and health. LDL results below 2 are considered excellent.
HDL is referred to as the good cholesterol. It actually helps to remove the LDL (bad cholesterol) from the bloodstream. As a result, it protects the circulatory system from damage. Foods full of healthy HDL include leafy greens, fruits, green smoothies, vegetables, grapefruit, walnuts, almonds, salmon etc. Make sure you are eating plenty of these. HDL results above 2 are considered excellent. An overall cholesterol reading of around 4 is fantastic.
If you are not familiar with these numbers, please go and have your cholesterol checked and get to know what they mean for your health. While you are visiting your doctor, ask them to also check your blood pressure as well. Blood pressure and cholesterol work together and can maintain your health or put you at risk of serious health issues.
