I was introduced to the lows of being overweight on my first day at school. During recess, another kid in the playground called me fat. I was really upset. I had no idea that I was overweight until that moment. I was five years old. That memory has stayed with me ever since.

In my later years, I used to jump on the scales and tie my self-esteem to the number that appeared. Of course, the only number that was acceptable was on verge of being underweight. Some months I would feel great and others I would want to hide from the world. The only thing that used to matter to me was the number on the scales. It was all I could focus on.

I’ve tried so many different diets. And you know what, they all worked. I always chose the diet based on weight loss, the faster the better. Every diet recommended that I eat meat every 2 to 3 hours. There were some vegetables and never any fruit. They were high protein, low carb diets. And they got me where I thought I wanted to go.

Weight Loss & Green SmoothiesEach time I lost the desired amount of weight, I would feel fantastic. I would pull out my skinny wardrobe and wear it with pride. When I thought I’d unlocked the secrets of weight loss, the inevitable happened. I lost my way. I would start to ‘treat’ myself to things that were off the menu. I couldn’t sustain it and drifted back into my old habits. Little did I know or understand how harmful eating so much meat would be. Before I knew it I’d put the weight back on, with interest!

I would put my skinny wardrobe into storage and pull out my fat wardrobe. Down my self-esteem would plummet. This entire cycle would take between a twelve to eighteen months to occur. Then you guessed it; it would start all over again. I had been in this cycle for 25 years.

It wasn’t until I had a life changing experience that I changed my focus. After having two strokes at 39 my focus shifted my focus from weight loss to health. I read some pretty sobering statistics about stroke. Three people in every five who experience stroke will pass away in the following year. One will have another stroke and the last person will be okay.

I desperately wanted to be the person who was going to be okay.

Weight Loss & Green SmoothiesJurgen, my husband had been introduced to green smoothies a couple of weeks prior to my strokes. We had just started making them at home the week before our lives changed forever. Jurgen would bring green smoothie into the hospital for me. He would put it into the fridge and reminded me to drink it.  He would pour me glass after glass when he came to visit.

The doctors could not tell me what caused the strokes. This changed my priorities very quickly. I threw out the weight loss diets and looked for ways to be healthy.

That was all that mattered if I wanted to live.

The green smoothies then started a chain reaction. We started introducing more and more healthy foods into our diet. I looked for foods to rebuild my brain connections and give me energy. I discovered raw vegetarian foods and Quinoa. The taste for sugar, fried foods and meat disappeared. I became an accidental vegetarian.  I wanted my brain and my body to heal. Most importantly, I didn’t want to fear stroke ever again.

But then the most amazing thing happened. When I focused on being healthy, my weight took care of it’s self. I found my perfect healthy weight. There’s no skinny or fat wardrobe anymore, just lovely clothes that fit perfectly. I’ve just celebrated three extra years of life after the strokes. I’ve never looked better or been healthier. It’s such a freeing experience to know how to manage my weight… and it’s delicious! On a personal note, I’ll never ask again if my bum looks big in this.  I know its perfect just the way it is. I will never again tie my self esteem to a number.  Not my age, my bank account and definitely not my weight.

No, don’t replace any meals with your green smoothies.  Just add in one to two glasses a day to get started.  It is okay if you miss a meal and just have your green smoothie.  You will still be getting lots of nutrients. David Wolf, the super food expert has a brilliant saying “Don’t take things away from your diet.  Adding in more good foods, will crowd out the bad foods.”  This is the easiest way to make a change and not feel like you are being deprived of anything.

I’m feeling bloated after my green smoothies?

If your green smoothie is quite thick, you may feel very full afterwards.  Add more water into your smoothie to make them thinner and easier to drink.  Doing this will leaving you feeling satisfied but not over full.  Having a green smoothie with a meal can also be very filling.  Drink your smoothies separately to your meals and you will stop you feeling bloated.

I have put on weight drinking green smoothies?

Make sure you start with one or two glasses of green smoothie a day.  Again, it’s good to thin them out if they are too thick.  You will find in the first few weeks that your appetite starts to change and you feel more satisfied.  You may also notice that you start to have slightly smaller meals as your appetite is more balanced. Most people who are carrying extra weight will start to drop any excess kilos.  For others, it might be a couple of weeks until their appetite balances between the green smoothies, their meals and their weight.  You may start to notice that you lose your appetite for processed foods and meats.  You will start to want healthier, natural whole foods.  These all play a key role in finding your ideal weight.

What can I do if my partner puts too much fruit in the green smoothies for me?

No two people will like exactly the same style of smoothie.  Just thin out your smoothie if it has too much fruit in it.  Alternatively, make two different batches tailored to your individual tastes.  We do this at home all the time.  I prefer lots of greens and little fruit.  Jurgen loves the greens and also adds in loads of fresh fruit.  I just thin them down a little so I can have my smoothies and also enjoy the foods I love to eat.  It’s all about balance.

How much green smoothie should I drink per day?

It depends on the person and is different for everyone.  Everyone will have an amount that is right for him or her.  Start with small amount and listen to your body.  If you feel like you want more, have it.  You will find the right average for your body. I do notice if I miss a day, the next day I will drink a lot of smoothie.  Trust that your body will regulate what it needs.

What is the ratio of leafy greens to fruit?

To start with use one to two large handfuls of leafy greens.  Add in several pieces of your favourite fruit and top up with water.  Using lots of fruit in the beginning will make them taste great until you get used to them.  As the weeks go by, you will probably start using less fruit and more greens.  This is a natural progression.  The ratio once you get used to drinking green smoothies is roughly 40% greens and 60% fruit.  Enjoying more “green” smoothies, I prefer using a third of the blender filled with greens, one third filled with fruit and top the rest of the 2 litre jar with water.

Why are my green smoothies separating?

You need to use a combination of both soluble and insoluble fibre to stop your smoothies from separating.  They are still just as healthy if they do separate, they are just a bit nicer to drink if they are creamy. The greens will always be a great source of insoluble fibre.  Soluble fibre is found in some fruits. Adding fruits including soluble fibre into your green smoothies, will give you a creamy blend.  Soluble fibre includes – mangoes, bananas, strawberries, pears, plums and papaya etc.

Yesterday we talked about how green smoothies combined with exercise help to maintain your ideal body weight. Here are some great ingredients you can add to your green smoothies to help your body find the right weight balance. It’s really important to find fruits and vegetables that give your body the nutrients it’s needs to be healthy and well.

Apples contain antioxidants, which help to prevent metabolic syndrome.   This is a condition where a person gains excess belly fat.  Apples detoxify your liver, boost your immune system and provide lots of fibre.

Kale is one of the healthiest leafy greens vegetables.  It contains vitamins, antioxidants and fibre.  The fibre will aid digestion, prevent bloating and reduce water retention.

Blueberries are packed insoluble fibre that assists your digestive system by removing toxic build up.  They also low in calories and provide the body with vitamin C, potassium and antioxidants.  Blueberries contain tannins, which reduce inflammation in the digestive system.

Avocados contain good fats, which are perfect for weight loss.  Bad fats promote weight gain; good fats maintain a healthy body weight.  The secret is to eat them in moderation.  Approximately one quarter to half an avocado a day will be perfect.  If you are using it in your smoothies, it is better to start with just a little, as it can have quite a strong flavour.

Maintaining a healthy body weight is an important part of our overall health.  Some people find this easier than others.  I used to be in the latter group until I started drinking green smoothies.  I have tried numerous diets and fads over the years with varying rates of success.  I always choose diets based on weight loss.  This is inevitably where I went wrong.  I was focused on a number on the scales, not fitness and being within a healthy weight range.

The real secret to weight loss is great nutrition, exercise, and mindset.  Simply put it’s energy in, energy out! If you are eating more energy in the form of food than you are exerting through exercise, you will invariably gain weight.  In reverse, if you are exerting more energy than you are consuming through meals, you will lose weight.  What you feed your body for energy is really important.

So, why does great nutrition matter?  Eating plenty of raw vegetables, fruit, leafy greens, nuts, fish and legumes will create usable for your body. I really recommend you consider removing diet products, low fat, processed and packaged foods from your diet.  They are dead foods.  While they may fill you up, they are not providing you with proper nutrition.  Your body will struggle to convert it into energy and nutrients. It will only be adding extra calories your body can’t really use.  It will literally starve the body, when it’s consumed.

Green Smoothie Lifestyle

Green smoothies will stop your cravings for a lot of processed foods, sugar and meat.  They will actually feed your body and in turn

your body will respond improving your health. Processed sugars, in particular are addictive and are added to many products from sauces, biscuits, breads, breakfast cereal, drinks, alcohol, canned foods etc.   They will not help you loose weight. Get back to basics with good old-fashioned fresh food.

After a month of drinking green smoothies, I noticed that my weight was gradually beginning to drop.  I needed to loose around 5kg, which happened easily.  My focus was firmly on food – I do my love food!  I also started walking and a little light, slow running.  This is where energy output really makes a difference and the excess weight started to vanish.

I did a lot of research on nutrition and green smoothies.  That information really underpinned my recovery and ongoing weight management. It has been the blueprint to maintaining my ideal body weight.
